August 2018: Time To Relax

By Lucy Clementson-Mills
Wednesday, August 1, 2018

How are you? I hope you had a great July and are feeling ready for August.

July certainly was a hot one and if you were anything like me you may have found it harder to have the energy to do all those things you had planned!

Well August is not the time to worry about this and over exert ourselves as this month we are talking about relaxation.

By definition, relaxation is ‘the state of being free from tension and anxiety’.

What a wonderful state to be in! But when was the last time you truly felt relaxed? So many of us know it is important to take time to relax, but we either forget to do it or we find it really hard to do. We are so used to living with tension, being busy, running around and experiencing anxiety and that means we find we just can’t ‘switch off’.

But the danger is if we don’t learn how to relax, we will burn out.

We are not listening to our body and our spirit. We are pushing and damaging the mind and body beyond their ability to repair. But by learning ways to relax, we can start to give our body, emotions and mind that opportunity to heal.

What is more, relaxation doesn’t have to take up lots of your time. It could be as simple as:

  • Taking a few minutes out of your normal routine to focus on your breathing. Bringing your full awareness to each breath to help calm the mind and body down
  • Getting down to play with your children, or your pet and being fully present in that moment
  • Cooking a lovely meal
  • Going for a walk or spending time outside in nature
  • Listening to some music
  • Reading a book
  • Doing some yoga

As I am nearing the end of my pregnancy I will be honouring relaxation this month. This doesn’t always come easy to me, but I know how important it is for my wellbeing and for those around me too. This will involve reading some books, playing the piano and cooking some new dishes.

So what will you commit to?

If you find it hard to justify relaxing there are two days this month which may help give you that extra inspiration.

On 10th August people will be celebrating Lazy Day - encouraging us to relax and get away from everyday stresses. On 15th August there is Relaxation Day, helping us to slow down, take it easy and relax.

Plus in the UK we have a bank holiday on 27th August, giving us an extra day to just (you guessed it) RELAX!

So what are you waiting for? Take some time out to relax this month.

The short video below may be just what you need to get you in the right frame of mind to relax. Taking time to slow down, to bring our awareness to our breathing, to quieten the busy mind and to allow tension to be released from the body.

I also have an online 10-week yoga course starting soon where you will practice different ways to loosen up and release tension in the body, learn how to breathe properly and enjoy various relaxation techniques. All in the comfort of your own home!

Click here if you would like to find out more information about this online course.

Wishing you a beautiful, relaxed August.

With loving kindness always,
