Keep Going

Wow, happy December!! This has snuck up on me this year and after a long summer it feels crazy we are now near the end of 2020!

But there we go! Now let’s get straight into our December newsletter which is packed full of free yoga videos and practical tips and ideas to help and support us all this month …..

I want to start with a short story ….. someone shared something recently which whilst it was related to giving birth (stay with me here) it made me think about the current situation we are all in.

The post explained how women often say “I can’t do it” when they are in labour and then more often than not pain-relieving drugs will be offered.

But sometimes just a word of encouragement can make such a difference.

In this instance the lady explained when she was in such intense pain and said, “I just can’t do it” her midwife said, “but you can, because you’re already doing it”. This made all the difference to her – to be heard, to be seen and her concerns validated but also receiving positive support too. The midwife believed in her ability, she just needed to as well.

It made me think about the situation we are all in and whilst I don’t want to dwell on this too much in our last newsletter of 2020, this story did resonate with me. Whether there have been times already this year where you’ve felt this is too much or you’re feeling it right now – please remember you can get through this …. because you already are. Every day we are working through this current situation and yes, some days are easier than others. But remember, you can do it.

Just like the lady in the story, we may need someone to support us with this. Whether that is someone to listen to us or to talk with or having that person who can bring some positivity to our day and lift us up when we most need it.

My hope in this newsletter is to give you some tools and tips to help you over the Christmas period too. A time which can often be pretty busy and if we aren’t careful, can leave us feeling depleted and exhausted. Which I am sure is not what you want for what is meant to be such a joyous time of the year.

I hope some of these things help and if you don’t need these right now, just know they are here and are things you can come back to if you need them at a later date. Or perhaps you know a friend of family member who may benefit from them?

  • First of all, if you’re feeling anxious, worried or living in the future too much and can’t stop your busy mind going into overdrive or find it hard to just remain present, enjoying the day ahead of you try some alternate nostril breathing (nadi shodhana pranayama).

  • This is especially great to do before bed to relieve any tension, anxiety and help calm the nervous system. Click here to practice this with me. Just 9 rounds of alternate nostril breathing can do wonders and then you can increase this up to 5 minutes and more if required.

  • On waking up in the morning, practice gratitude. A wonderful way to do this is writing down in a journal or beautiful notepad 5 things you’re grateful for as you sip on a glass of warm water with fresh lemon & ginger. A positive and uplifting way to start your day (and if you have more than 5 things to write done; great!)

  • Choose your thoughts. This is a video I shared earlier this year where we replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts to help us achieve mental and emotional balance. Here is the video again where I explain the concept of Pratipaksha Bhavanam to help you bring more balance into your life too.

  • Switch off the negative. Whether that is the news on the radio or TV or if people around you continue to talk about negative situations or stories - remember you can leave these conversations and you can turn off news notifications on your phone. This sounds simple but if you find the conversations over Christmas coming back to Covid or what 2021 may look like and you can feel this is starting to make you feel anxious; know you can ask to change the subject. Perhaps have some alternatives ready to offer – uplifting and fun conversations to lighten the mood. This isn’t being naive to what is going on in the world around us, but it is making a conscious decision on where you want to invest your energy and what you want to surround yourself with. As don’t forget it isn’t just the food we eat which affects our digestion and our body. We also digest our emotions and thoughts too and therefore these too have a direct impact on our body and overall wellbeing.

Before I close off this month’s newsletter, in other news:

  • Yoga January – come and join me this January!

Three years ago I launched Yoga January – providing free 5-20 minute yoga videos every day in January with the aim of helping people access yoga from the comfort of their own home. To introduce people to a safe style of yoga and hopefully help them create a healthy new hobby and habit as part of their daily routine.

I am going to be sharing this again this January as I don’t think there has ever been a time we’ve needed yoga so much.

This is all for free so to join in with Yoga January please click here and I’ll be in touch nearer to January!

  • 2021 dates - the last class of 2020 will be on 17th December and classes will resume week commencing 4th January.

  • The gift of yoga – if you are looking for a different gift idea, don’t forget I offer gift vouchers. These can be put towards classes or private yoga sessions (either face to face in Cardiff or online). If you want to find out more about the vouchers please get in touch (my email and subject “Can you please tell me more about your gift vouchers”) and we can discuss what you’re looking for.

So well done on getting this far! This leaves me to say a very big, “thank you” for what has been the most challenging, wonderful, bizarre and transformative year. Your continued support, love and positivity has been so gratefully received and the sense of community within the classes – online and face to face has just been tremendous.

Who knows what 2021 has in store for us. But as something to think about here is a little video I made for you about how yoga can help us in 2021 by allowing us to live a more balanced life. Supporting our health and happiness every day.

Thank you so much and I really hope you have the most beautiful December and Christmas.

With loving kindness always,

Lucy
